Homemade Applesauce

One of my favorite Fall flavors is applesauce, I just love how it makes the whole house smell warm and inviting.  Over the years I have tried several different recipes, but they have always had tons of sugar in them.  So I decided to try and make my own recipe.  With a bit of research, I was able to put together a recipe that is a slam dunk.  It’s not only the best tasting applesauce that I have ever had, it is also really good for you.

start with about 3 lbs of apples and a couple of pears (the quality of the fruit definitely makes a difference – I used the fruit that we had picked in Julian)

DSC00628

peel the apples and pears fully

core and dice your fruit into roughly 1 inch pieces

throw the fruit in a pot with a splash of water (1/4 cup) and lemon juice (1 tbsp)

add 1 cinnamon stick and 1 (generous) tablespoon of honey

give it a stir, partially cover and let simmer, stirring occasionally for about 40 minutes until it cooks down

voilà, remove the cinnamon stick and dig in!

I hope that you all enjoy a great Fall weekend!
