Last week Ryan and I traveled back to Wisconsin to spend the weekend with my family.  To be honest, we were traveling home for some very sad reasons, but somehow being together as a family always seems to put a happy spin on things.

There is just something about going home that really puts a pep in my step, hits the refresh button for me, and genuinely brings me joy.  I could say that it is that fresh Midwestern air, or the insane amounts of doggy snuggles, or maybe even the butter burgers and custard.  But it’s none of those things.  It’s just being home and being together as a family.

The hardest adjustment for both Ryan and I with living in San Diego is the distance.  We don’t have any family that is within any sort of reasonable amount of driving distance.  And while we definitely do our best with phone calls, group texts, emails, and Skype; nothing can replace that face to face time that you get to spend with your family.

A hug from my parents, making jokes with my brother and sister, trying to sneakily put on Christmas music in October hoping that no one will notice – laughing, singing, crying – whatever it is, when we are together, as my Mom would say, “everything is right with the world.”

So in the midst of all of our crazy busy lives, my heart is so full that we were all able to pull together and have the weekend together.  It was definitely the highlight of my week, and I can’t deny it, I am pretty damn lucky to call these people my family.
