17 Months

Wow, 17 months.  I can’t quite believe that 17 months have passed by since I first started my 101 in 1001.  For whatever reason, it just feels like the time has flown by. . .17 months.  I don’t want to say that I am feeling panicked about completing everything on my list (because I think that there are some things that might never happen) (like no. 83), but I am definitely feeling a little bit of a crunch here.  So I just keep reminding myself that I didn’t create this list to feel like I had to complete everything on it in order to be successful, I created it as a simple list of dreams and desires for the near future.

27. Find a new pair of sunglasses that are comfortable enough for all-day wear.

I have finally found a pair of sunglasses that I both love how they look, and most importantly, how they feel.  And while my goal was to find a pair that were “comfortable enough for all-day wear,” I am going to say that these are close enough.  I probably wouldn’t wear these all all day, but they are pretty darn close.

35. Improve my posture, and be conscious of it everyday.

Have I succeeded at this one yet?  Well, no.  In fact, as I was just editing this post and suddenly read the above goal, I immediately sat up straighter.  So I am listing this as a completed goal to sort-of will it to happen.  This is definitely something that I want to succeed at, and need to address in my life.  And Dad, just in case you are wondering, I am still kicking myself that I didn’t listen to your “stand up straight” advice more often as a kid.

47. Be more assertive: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

This is a tough one.  I am not sure that I will ever be able to say, “okay, today is the day that I have officially been assertive for ___ months without fail. . .”  But, this is definitely something that I have made a very conscious effort with, and continue to work on daily.  But to be honest, it hasn’t been easy.  There have been growing pains for me (with choosing to be more assertive), and also for the people in my life.  I have found that the people who are used to talking over me or communicatively overpowering me don’t really like that I am no longer allowing that dynamic to happen.  But regardless of the challenges, this has been a very rewarding journey for me.

48. Stop explaining myself and my choices.

This feels a lot like no. 47 for me.  I am not 100% perfect at this all of the time, but I have made huge changes, and I consistently remember that this is the choice that I want to make.  And most importantly, when I make the choice not to explain myself, I feel great.

53. Fix our pesky and loud water filter.

After much research and strange attempts to fix our water filter using a bike pump (thank you Ryan), we’re calling this.  Drain covers are just as good as it’s going to get.  Since we are renters, there is only so much time and money that we want to invest in different projects for an apartment that is not our own.  And since the drain covers almost completely eradicate that annoying dripping sound (that is so loud that it has woken me up many a night), we are happy to call this project complete.

64. Stroll under the Eiffel Tower.

I am sure that you all remember our trip to Paris this past Fall. . .sigh.  Yep, it was every bit as magical and romantic as we had both imagined it would be.  And while we didn’t exactly stroll under the Eiffel Tower, we spent plenty of time strolling around it, and picnicking in front of it.

71. Cover our Christmas Tree in a plastic bag.

Done and done.  Our Christmas Tree is safely tucked away in our storage unit (with the lights and beads kept on, ready for next year), protected from dust and debris with a handy dandy tree bag.  (Which is basically just a glorified garbage bag.)

73. Start getting paid to blog.

I have known this for awhile, but I often forget.  The universe is a tricky thing, and it will take me as literally as I choose to be.  (Which is a good reminder for me to be even more clear and specific with my goals.)  Technically speaking, I am getting paid to blog.  So yes, no. 73 is complete.  But at the same time, what I was really intending with this goal was that I would be receiving monetary compensation for my work.  So goal complete?  Yes.  But also, goal revised.

100. Don’t sweat the small stuff and get caught up in other peoples’ drama.

For me, I think that this is another goal that will never officially be done; this will always be something that I will need to be consciously working on.  Since I am both a sensitive person, and a “people-pleaser,” handling what other people say or how they treat me has been a little bit tricky.  But, last year I made huge strides to only keep myself surrounded by people and things that are adding positive value to my life.  And while there is no real measure for this goal being completed, it is something that I am working on every day, and have never felt better about.
