Wisconsin – home to the Packers, cold snowy winters, frozen custard, cheese curds, cheese heads (including myself), and of course, butter burgers. Nothing beats coming home, especially for the Holidays. We can always count on a white Christmas, which also provides us with the childish joy of playing in the snow, long nights in with the family by the fire, lots of game playing, and of course, one seriously delicious lunch at Solly’s.
Solly’s has been around and famous for as long as I know. My parents used to grab burgers there when they were first dating, I’ve been going for as long as I can remember; and when I started dating my husband, of course, I brought him there too.
Although you could go to Solly’s for just about anything, including breakfast, there is really only one reason you go to Solly’s – the Original Butter Burger. Now, this is no burger for the faint of heart, we are talking serious amounts of butter here people. So you have to go in prepared (a.k.a. starving).
Butter Burger
noun / but⋅ter bur⋅ger / buht-her ber-ger 1 : A hamburger patty topped with a buttery substance made from milk. 2 : Pure deliciousness that must be consumed when visiting Milwaukee.
Yes, a butter burger is exactly as it reads. A burger topped with butter. And at Solly’s it comes with just the right amount of butter (copious), cheese (if you’re smart), and stewed onions. And while you’re at it, you might as well throw in an order of french fries, onion rings, a hot fudge malt and a fresh banana malt. As I said, this isn’t for the faint of heart.
no, that’s not a pile of melted cheese, it’s butter
yep, that’s also butter getting ready to melt down my burger
still butter
But what do you do with all of that extra, delicious Wisconsin butter that has melted into a puddle on your plate? You dip your burger in it of course. And you will love it, because truly there is nothing better. And no, I am not joking. If there is one thing that I am not going to joke about, it’s butter, and burgers, and custard, and all things food, and Wisconsin, and everything…okay, well, you get the point, it’s delicious.
the aftermath
Yes, post-Solly’s you will likely be in a buttery food coma for the rest of the day, but it is worth every bite. Now if only we can convince them to open a branch in San Diego…
