What I’m Reading

To be honest, I was never much of an enthusiastic reader during high school or college.  I really just did my best to get by with what was required.  After finishing all of my schooling, I think I thought to myself “yay!  I never have to read again!!”  That was the time in my life when I probably only read 2 books a year (if even).  The Mr. on the other hand, loves to read; and while I was flipping through my magazines each month, he would be putting another book to rest.

Well, it took me a few years, but I have finally figured out my reading style.  And you know what?  I really like to read (shocker, I know).  I have found it to be a nice quiet time in my life.  I am, however, aware that my reading style is a little non-traditional.  I have found that what works best for me is to be reading a couple of different books at the same time.  So, here’s what I am reading right now:

“The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo.  As a self-aware lover of cleaning and organizing, I was really excited to start this book.  I am about half-way through already, and loving every page.  Marie has some really great advice, which the Mr. and I have already been putting into practice.  (Like finally getting rid of a jar of buttons that I have been saving for…hmmm…maybe 8 years or so just in case a button breaks and I need one.  Which, by the way, I have never ever used a single button from that jar!)  Even if you’re not interested in “tidying up” your house, Marie offers advice that could be applied to your life as well.  It’s definitely an easy and fun read.

“You Can You Will: 8 Undeniable Qualities of a Winner” by Joel Osteen.  I have never read a Joel Osteen book before, but when I read this title, passing by the books in Target, it grabbed me.  I just finished this book, and you know what?  I loved it!  First of all, Joel Osteen is a great speaker and very talented writer, he is very inspirational.  The ideas that he suggests as qualities of a winner, and examples he uses, really hit home with me. (Like the idea that you can only make yourself happy – that you are not the keeper of other’s happiness.)  This is a really quick and uplifting read.  The Mr. is going to read it now and then pass it back to me for a re-read.  (I really loved it!)

My final read right now? “Il Club delle Baby-Sitter: Dawn e il Californiano Perfetto” by Ann M. Martin.  I found this at a used book store in Tuscany and I was so excited about it.  To help my “learn to speak Italian” goals, I wanted to starting reading a book in Italian.  Since my Italian still isn’t super advanced though, a pre-teen read is perfect for me. I’m also really getting a kick out of it because I used to read the Babysitter’s Club back in the day!

So what’s your reading style?  Do you start and finish one book at a time?  Or are you like me and enjoy having several different books going at once?

  1. Excellent subject – I love to observe what people are reading. Next on my list is One Year Wiser by Mike Madaglia – a book of illustrated meditations. Enjoy one and all.

  2. I wasn’t a reader at all in high school or college either and now I have an ever growing wish list of books on Amazon. I have heard great things about the magic of tidying up, will def add it to my list now!
