this week’s highlights

Saturday / After a few week’s travel break from our local farmer’s market, we returned this morning, and it was absolutely gord-geous. The air was crisp (for us), the sun was shining (as usual), and the produce was definitely looking like Fall’s bounty – squash, pomegranates, apples, persimmons, colorful Swiss chard and pumpkins. As much as I love the arrival of Summer and stone fruit season, I’ll always be a Fall baby at heart.

Sunday / Tonight’s dinner was really a decadent treat. One of our favorite restaurants in Boston has always been Giacamo’s. And one of our favorite things to get there (thanks to my sister-in-law), are their pumpkin tortellini in a sage and mascarpone cream sauce. Unfortunately though, we haven’t been able to find pumpkin tortellini anywhere in San Diego. But to our delight, we discovered some honey roasted pumpkin ravioli at Trader Joe’s this week. And while they weren’t exactly Giacamo’s, they were absolutely delicious.

Monday / I must have been a really good girl this year, because no, I did not get just one birthday cake, I got two! But I do need to disclose that this didn’t completely happen by chance. Because the truth is that I do have two favorite birthday cakes. Yes, carrot cake, but also the most decadent and rich chocolate blackout cake. And being the sweet hubby that Ryan is, and knowing that I really do have two favorite cakes, he made them both for me. I am definitely one lucky birthday girl.

Tuesday / I am still in a season with running where it doesn’t really feel all that fun. But then again, who knows if it ever will. Yes, after my run is over I feel happy and good about it. But before the run and during the run, I am pretty much telling myself any sort of motivational anything to just keep myself from stopping and going home to eat more of that chocolate cake. So to jazz things up a bit this morning, I took my run down to the waterfront, and I may or may not have put on some Christmas music as well. Yep, it’s true. I am 100% that girl. Because really, why should we only holly jolly for a few months out of the year?

Wednesday / We made David Lebovitz’s oven-baked frites a few weeks ago, and haven’t been able to stop ever since. These babies taste like they are straight from a Parisian bistro, and you would have absolutely no clue that they aren’t deep fried. They are crispy, herby, salty and all sorts of deliciousness. We have definitely made these a part of the regular rotation, and I am as happy as a clam about it.

Thursday / And speaking of clams. . .we recently renewed our subscription to Food & Wine magazine after a several year hiatus, and I instantly found so many delicious looking recipes. So tonight was the night for “littleneck clams in the style of escargot.” Since neither one of us loves snails, but we sure as heck love that garlicky butter sauce that they are dripping in, this recipe sounded pretty perfect. Well, perhaps better on paper than in practice. Although the dish was good, there were several things that we would definitely do differently in the future. Most of which would be starting with a new recipe.

Friday / It’s rare that I say this, but today was the kind of day that I just sort of felt like staying home. And I mean all day. For whatever reason I was lagging a little bit after a busy week, and the comforts of home and my snuggly socks were just too much to pass up. Luckily I had plenty of things to keep me busy (as usual), because it felt really nice to have a quieter day before the weekend moved in.

  1. I just looked at those ravioli the other day but decided not to get them. I’ll go back and give them a shot now because that looks SO delicious!

    1. Yes Emma, definitely give them a try! We are really a bit addicted to them!!
