Summer Fun

Are you looking for something to brighten up your weekend, or change up your Summer routine?  San Diego has so many great things to keep you busy all Summer long.  Here are some of my favorite things to do during the Summer:

1. Head to the beach!  My favorite beach in San Diego is Coronado.  Repeatedly prized with top beach awards locally and nationally, Coronado is a beautiful beach.  With the backdrop of the famous Del Coronado Hotel, and the pristine sand, there’s nothing to complain about here.  Head over early for some peace and quiet, and for some great shelling, or grab your boogie board and make an afternoon of it.  More of a night person?  Watch the beautiful sunset and then snag one of the bonfire pits and roast some ‘mallows with your friends.  Coronado really has something for everyone.

2.  Looking for a little more culture?  Head to Marina Park South to watch the San Diego Symphony perform their Summer Pops shows.  With two different programs every weekend, you are bound to find a concert that peaks your interest.  Don’t expect to see the orchestra with their normal classical repertoire here, it’s all pops, all Summer long.  Some of the highlights this Summer are Divas of Disco, Ben Folds, LeAnn Rimes, Burt Bacharach and the Pirates of the Caribbean movie with live score.  Enjoy the show with table service, or pack a picnic and relax with friends.

3. Get a Rita’s!  New to the scene in San Diego, Rita’s is a water ice company from the East Coast.  We used to love getting a Rita’s on a hot Summer night back East.  They just opened a bunch of locations in San Diego this Spring, so check to see where your closest shop is.  And make sure to try my personal favorite, the blendini.

4.  Want a taste of the islands?  Head to Roy’s, sit on the patio and order a Mai Tai.  With their Hawaiian music and tiki torches, you really get that island feeling.  And if you are looking to kill 2 birds with one stone, then make a plan to go at night over the weekend, and you will hear the entire San Diego Symphony Summer Pops show and see the fireworks.

5. Enjoy Balboa Park.  Balboa Park is a feast for the eyes – beautifully manicured gardens, countless museums, the Organ Pavilion, the Water Lilly pond, the Zoo, restaurants, a carousel, the rose garden, walking and running paths, a dog park – the list goes on and on.  You could easily spend days here and still not get to everything.

6. Grab your beach cruiser, and go for a bike ride.  We love hopping on our bikes with no particular destination in mind.  San Diego has great bike lanes and sidewalks, taking you just about anywhere.  We’ve biked from Downtown to Pacific Beachit really gives you a great look at all that San Diego has to offer.  Often we just do a loop around Downtown, biking through Seaport Village, Little Italy, or along the Embarcadero.  Biking is a great way to get around San Diego, and to just add a little fun into your life.
