Summer Drink, Al Fresco

For some reason, after-work cocktails always feel more fun in the Summer.  The warmer weather, the longer nights, sandals and sunglasses…it all makes for a great night.

While San Diego has a ton of great options, during the Summer, we prefer places with outdoor seating and great views for watching those beautiful California sunsets.  Here are my top picks for a Summer drink:

1. Isola

Where?

India Street in Little Italy

Why?

Outdoor seating both on India street and in the back of the restaurant.  Amazing happy hour, friendly staff, and fabulous food (you must order the chickpea fries!).  A fun place to watch the hustle and bustle of Little Italy.

Wear?

Anything – work clothes, workout clothes…they are just happy for you to be joining them.

2. Mister A’s

Where?

Banker’s Hill

Why?

The patio gives you spectacular views of downtown, Coronado and Point Loma, with the bonus of watching the planes fly by and the sun set.  Be prepared to beat the crowds for a spot on the patio, and deal with a sometimes difficult front of house (but the views are worth it).

Wear?

They have a dress code here of no sneakers or sandals for the men and are happy to enforce it.  Come from work or a bit dressed up, and you are good to go.

3. Glass Door Restaurant

Where?

Columbia Street in Little Italy

Why?

Although the food gets mixed reviews here, just grab a cocktail on the patio and enjoy the beautiful views of the harbor and Little Italy.  My suggestion?  Go for “Wine Wednesday” and share a bottle of Chandon with friends for $20 while enjoying the sunset.

Wear?

You could get away with anything here, but most of the crowd will be smart casual.

4. Babcock & Story

Where?

Hotel Del Coronado

Why?

You feel like you are on a tropical island…oh wait, you are on a tropical island!  Grab a table outside to enjoy the ocean, palm trees, and very often live music (Tues-Sat).  Be prepared for crowds and tourists in the Summer months, but it is so completely worth it.  You get that “I’m on a vacation” feeling here.

Wear?

This is a resort that caters to your needs, so anything is acceptable.  You will see people coming straight from the ocean for a cocktail, or straight from work.

The weather is supposed to be really great this week in San Diego.  Hotter days make for warmer nights, which means it’s the perfect time to try out one of my recommendations with some friends.  Enjoy!
