March Roundup

I’m starting another new series on the blog here today, a sort of monthly recap picked from my favorite Instagram moments.   This is going to be a great way for me to look back on my month and share with you all of my highlights.

I’m sure that some months my top moments will be from travels, work projects and special dinners out.  But some months we are just quiet at home, and I feel just as blessed and grateful for getting a coffee with my husband or cooking spaghetti and meatballs…and in turn getting to share that with you all!

I want to share those moments with you, and share why that moment was special for me.  A little behind the scenes for you all…and a little bit of a closer look into my life, and our lives.  Just another little piece of me, and my life with the hubby.  Hope you enjoy!

Getting to surprise my father-in-law with an early 70th birthday party was as much of a treat for us as it was for him.  As I have shared before, the single hardest part about living in California is being so far from family.  (Our closest family is in the Midwest.)  We definitely wish that we were able to visit our families more often, and hate that feeling of missing out on celebrating special occasions together, or even just being able to have a catch up dinner together.  So on the contrary, getting to spend time with our families is such a blessing, and we are so grateful for their willingness and availability to visit us in California.

Although I truly enjoy the pleasure of working from home, I completely miss the hubby when he is gone all day.  So, my excitement for when he gets home is always through the roof!  Lately we’ve been enjoying more aperitivo (Italian happy hour) when he gets home, and it’s been a really nice way to unwind and catch up on both of our days.  And knowing us, it typically includes something really delicious, like prosciutto melone.  Simple, but delicious.  (My favorite combination.)

While waiting for our coffee (post beach walk on Coronado) I happen to turn around and notice this adorable vintage red car.  Let me start by saying that pretty much everything about Coronado makes me smile, but something about seeing this red beauty reminded me of how Coronado really still has some of that small town feel to it.  When we go over there, it feels like we are escaping San Diego in the best of ways.  It has a way of giving me the recharge that I need.

Spaghetti and meatballs.  I mean, what else can I say?  It is definitely one of our absolute favorite meals.  For our meatballs, I follow the hubby’s Nonna’s recipe, which I learned from my father-in-law over the years. (When we lived back East, I used to go and cook with my father-in-law some days while the hubby was at work.  And luckily, these meatballs were one of the recipes he taught me.)  And you can’t have homemade (fried) meatballs without homemade pasta and red sauce, right?  There is really nothing better than a home cooked meal.  And there is definitely nothing better than Nonna’s meatballs.

Revisiting San Diego Zoo Safari Park was a lot of fun for me.  It had been years since we had been there, and now since all of the rain, everything was SO green.  And to be honest, I had the opportunity to visit the park because I had been invited for a media day, which for me was a big deal.  Knowing that people out there are noticing my work and appreciate it is a really great feeling.  Sometimes growth can feel very slow, so it is always nice to be reminded that you are getting there.

I’m not sure if our sunsets have always been so beautiful, or if I am just stopping to enjoy them more.  Either way, I have to say that we have had some really beautiful and colorful sunsets lately.  It truly feels like magic.  The sky can go from a gray cloudy marine layer into a pink and orange dream in a matter of minutes.  Mother nature is amazing…and also a great reminder to slow down, take a deep breath and enjoy.

Does anyone else get excited about produce?  I’m pretty sure that I inherited this quality from my Mom – the joy of picking up some fresh and delicious produce that you get to go home and create something with.  And that is probably why the majority of my Instagram feed is food in some form – fresh, prepped, cooked or eaten.  Lately the heirloom tomatoes at the farmers market have been SO sweet, and I simply can’t resist bringing them home.   If I remember correctly, these beauties gave us a delicious salad for my father-in-law’s birthday party and also gave us our favorite “Greek” pizza.

How could this not totally melt my heart… I woke up on St. Patrick’s Day to find a homemade card from my hubby.  Can anything really be any sweeter?  I can tell that he spent time planning out his design, coloring it, and then writing a little poem on the inside (in addition to a love note).  Seriously, I can say nothing else than that it melted my heart.  Completely.  Although I am not planning on ranking moments, this was without a doubt the highlight of March for me.  I love it when my hubby takes the time to do something special for me – it truly makes me feel like the luckiest and most special girl.  (If anyone is looking for advice on how to keep the spark alive…this will definitely get the job done!)
